Onboarding
We are delighted you are joining. Onboarding into the Technology department sits alongside the company induction run by HR, and your line manager owns it. During your first weeks, supporting you takes precedence over their other duties.
Everyone arrives with different experience, so the detail will differ for each person. What follows is the shape. Your feedback as you go through it improves it for the next person.
Arrival (your first hours)¶
Meet your line manager. HR and IT inductions. Meet your buddy, an engineer who will be your first port of call for everything from where things are to how we do things. Meet your team.
Orientation (your first days)¶
Set up your development environment with your manager. Read the pages colleagues have written about how they like to work, and draft your own. Read this Playbook and the parts of our internal Knowledgebase your team points you at.
Acclimation (your first weeks)¶
An introduction to the product you will work on and our product vision, with our head of product. A session on our ways of working with your manager: this Playbook made concrete. An overview of our architecture and standards. An introduction to our platform and pipelines with a DevOps engineer. An introduction to how we test with our lead test engineer. Your probation objectives are set.
Immersion (your first months)¶
A tour of our technology estate and where it is heading, with the principal engineer. A deep dive into Quartex, our platform. Your training plan and ongoing objectives. A face-to-face one-to-one with your manager booked for every six months.
Your buddy¶
Your buddy is there to make the first weeks easier. They answer the questions you do not want to bother your manager with, pair with you, introduce you to people, and help you find your way around the code and the culture. The Buddy guide sets out what they will do and how they will do it.
For managers joining us¶
Leaders and managers joining at lead, staff or principal level have an extended onboarding that adds handovers, introductions to the people they will manage and to product management, and ongoing coaching on our ways of working. The detail lives in our internal Knowledgebase.
